Heat Exchangers
What is a Heat Exchanger?
A heat exchanger is a device that transfers thermal energy or heat from one fluid (primary side) to another fluid (secondary side) without direct contact or mixing of the two. The main function of a heat exchanger is to increase the energy efficiency of a heating or cooling system by transferring heat and thereby reducing energy costs.
The plate heat exchanger consists of several parallel plates closely placed which allows water to flow between them. The hot and cold water flow through alternating ‘chambers’ in the heat exchanger so that one side of a plate is always in contact hot water and the other with cold and thereby allowing the thermal transfer.
Heat exchangers are widely used in HVAC systems helping to cool or heat buildings, but they are also found in industrial application making machines and engines work more efficiently. And logically, size of a heat exchanger varies depending on the application and requirements.
How is a Heat Exchanger Application Optimized?
With proper balance, a heat exchanger may maintain to work efficiently at reduced energy consumption. FlowCon recommends three different solutions to a heat exchanger installation:
1. Heat Exchangers with Pressure Independent Control (PICV)
The PICV will react to system pressure changes an regulate the flow of water to required flow by adjusting the actuator position. This helps the system to be accurately controlled even with pressure changes and reduced loads.

FlowCon recommends the following PICVs:
2. Heat Exchangers with Pressure Independent Temperature Control (PITCV)
The PTICV will react only to change in ΔT, which can be either deliberately set to a new target or automatic due to occupancy change. The PICV actuator will only move if a ΔT change is sensed. By optimizing ΔT, flow may be reduced to a minimum resulting in significant energy savings and extended life of equipment, while providing pressure and temperature independency and optimized comfort.

3. Heat Exchangers with Automatic Balancing (ABV)
The automatic balancing valve will react to system pressure changes and limit the flow of hot or chilled water to required max. flow helping the system to be accurately controlled even with pressure changes.
