Air Handling Units

What is an Air Handling Unit (AHU)?

An air handling unit – commonly shortened to AHU – is a unit which regulate and circulate indoor air. Central elements in an AHU are the fan and the heating, cooling or combi-coil. An AHU provides air treatment according to temperature, humidity and quality requirements and blows the air into a specific room or into the duct system. This handling process will flow air by the waterborne coil(s) providing the proper air temperature and with that also room temperature. AHUs are generally servicing larger areas and thereby larger flow rates.

How is an Air Handling Unit (AHU) Application Optimized?

An efficient AHU will - with proper balance - significantly reduce energy consumption, operating costs and help increase the building’s overall energy performance. FlowCon recommends three different solutions to an AHU installation:

  1. Pressure Independent Control (PICV)
  2. Pressure Independent and Temperature Control (PITCV)
  3. Automatic Balancing (ABV or Flow Limiter)

1. Air Handling Units with Pressure Independent Control (PICV)

The PICV will react to system pressure changes and regulate the flow of water to required flow by adjusting the actuator position. This helps the system to be accurately controlled even with pressure changes and reduced loads.

FlowCon recommends the following PICVs:

2. Air Handling Units with Pressure Independent and Temperature Control (PITCV)

The PITCV will react only to change in ΔT, which can be either deliberately set to a new target or automatic due to occupancy change. The PICV actuator will only move if a ΔT change is sensed. By optimizing ΔT, flow may be reduced to a minimum resulting in significant energy savings and extended life of equipment, while providing pressure independent ΔT control and optimized comfort.

3. Air Handling Units with Automatic Balancing (ABV)

The automatic balancing valve will react to system pressure changes and limit the flow of hot or cold water to required max. flow helping the system to be accurately controlled even with pressure changes. This solution is recommended to be installed with the separate control valve.
